Reds want Israeli FDI in Bengal, oppose bilateral tiesReds want Israeli FDI in Bengal, oppose bilateral ties
Our Correspondent
In Leftist mythology, Israel is the embodiment of all that is bad and ugly in the world. Jews are synonymous with big finance and global capitalism. Our comrades are fond of telling us that they are the people, who control banking and the corporate world in the US, who have great influence over policy making, who conspire to keep the West rich and the rest poor, and who are at the root of Islamic terror because they repressed the Palestinians. This is the reason that the commies start howling at any hint of improvement in Indo-Israeli ties; any military or security co-operation with Tel Aviv is also scoffed at. It was because of the overarching influence of the Left—and the political class' lust for Muslim votes—that we did not full diplomatic ties with Israel. This despite the fact that many Arab nations had normalised relations with their erstwhile enemy. It is a measure of our comrades' hypocrisy that the rabidly anti-Jewish Left is not averse to Israeli investment in West Bengal. Well, Tel Aviv is also keen on a free-trade agreement with India. According to a news report, though there had been informal talks on the subject earlier, the offer was made during the recent visit of Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Ashwani Kumar to Israel earlier this month.

It would be interesting to watch our comrades' reaction to these developments. Would they face a dilemma? Some of Israel's largest investments have been made in West Bengal. As per the report, Israel's biggest real estate company EMI, owned by billionaire tycoon Mordechai 'Monti' Zisser, has found West Bengal to be a good partner for its Indian investments. Tying up with Gujarat Ambuja Realty Group owned by Harsh Neotia, a top industrialist with deep links with the Left leadership, EMI will invest $230 million to build multi-specialty hospitals and medical centres in, among other places, West Bengal. One should not be surprised if our commies do two mutually exclusive things together: oppose security relations and support Israeli investment in West Bengal. Well, if they can support the Congress in New Delhi and oppose it in Calcutta, if they can resist foreign direct investment (FDI) in general but promote FDI by Chinese companies, they can also do contradictory things simultaneously. So, there is every probability of the Left pressing the Government to forbid Israeli investment, except when the beneficiary is the Left-ruled states. In common parlance, there are many words to denote Leftist practices, words like duplicity and hypocrisy. The communists, however, have an esoteric term to justify their deceitful and dishonest behaviour—they call it dialectics.
