In the Red: Left influences foreign policyIn the Red: Left influences foreign policy
Our Correspondent
That the Left has molded the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's economic policy is a well-established fact. The commies have scored another point: they have also greatly influenced the foreign office, especially in the recent past. It was chiefly because of them that the Indo-US nuclear deal is in a suspended animation. Then they goaded the Government to appease China on the issue of Tibetan protests. The Government has touched nadir once again in slavishly following the Left line—this time over Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's hurriedly planned visit to India. Communists love him, because he hates Israel and the US. In a famous October 2005 speech, Ahmadinejad said, "Our dear Imam (referring to Ayatollah Khomeini) said that the occupying regime must be wiped off the map and this was a very wise statement. We cannot compromise over the issue of Palestine… The new wave that has started in Palestine, and we witness it in the Islamic world too, will eliminate this disgraceful stain (Israel) from the Islamic world." The UPA has not covered itself in glory by deciding to host an egregious purveyor of hatred. The ruling coalition, which swears in the name of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, has tarnished the image of India by allowing Ahmadinejad to be a state guest.

Responding to Ahmadinejad's visit to India, the US urged the Indian Government to "call on him to meet the requirements that the Security Council and the international community has placed on him in terms of suspending their uranium enrichment activities and complying with the other requirements regarding their nuclear programme." This was a reasonable request, but the UPA regime retaliated in an appalling manner. "India and Iran are ancient civilizations whose relations span centuries. Both nations are perfectly capable of managing all aspects of their relationship with the appropriate degree of care and attention...Neither country needs any guidance on the future conduct of bilateral relations as both countries believe that engagement and dialogue alone lead to peace," said the Government spokesperson. Notice how cleverly the Government brushed under the carpet the crucial issue of nuclear non-proliferation and how petulantly, albeit obliquely, it equated sane counsel with interference in our foreign affairs. "We are advising Iran that since it is a signatory of NPT, it has some obligation to international treaties. We tell the US, do not take on yourself the responsibility whether Iran was manufacturing weapons or not. Leave it to the IAEA, the designated authority," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said. This could have been a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) speaking. Communist control over the Government is complete.
