China sells fake drugs as ‘Made in India’China sells fake drugs as ‘Made in India’
Our Correspondent
The Government has been prompt in registering protest against spurious Chinese medicines which are being sold in Nigeria (and perhaps elsewhere as well) with the ‘Made in India’ tag. “Taking serious note of the action by scrupulous elements to malign the Indian generic pharma industry, Embassy of India in Beijing, has been requested to lodge a strong protest with concerned Chinese authorities and also to impress upon them to take stringent action against such scrupulous elements,” a Commerce Ministry statement said. Quite apart from risk the health of a large number of Nigerians, these fake drugs give a bad name to the Indian pharmaceutical sector. India should also impress upon the World Health Organization (WHO), the specialized agency of the United Nations that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health, to pressure Beijing for effective action against the merchants of death. It is highly unlikely, though, that such a massive operation could have taken place from China without the consent, if not collusion, of the authorities at some level. In fact, nobody should be surprised if the unconscionable activity had enjoyed support from the highest echelons of the Chinese power structure. For it has been China’s policy over the years to hostilely encircle India in every possible manner—politically, militarily, economically.

We know for a fact that there are Chinese agents in our political system and maybe in the opinion-making apparatuses. They oppose anything and everything that is in consonance with national interest—opening up of the economy, higher foreign direct investment (except from China, which they campaign for), flexibility in the labor and education sectors, better relations with the US and Israel, a tough stand against jihad, etc. These Trojan Horses have been the bane of the nation for decades. China also befriends and supports the enemies of India—be it the insurgents in the North East, the Naxalites in across a number of states, the Maoists in Nepal, Pakistan and long goes the list. In the economic sphere, too, China has been trying its best to do as much harm as possible. It has been flooding our markets with its inferior goods. In the search for hydrocarbon fuels, it has been posing a major challenge to our aim to have energy security. The blocks we make bids for, China counters us aggressively. And now we face the menace of spurious medicines with the ‘Made in India’ tag. Even if this activity does not enjoy the blessings of the top leadership in Beijing, India’s protest will not prod any deterrent action against the culprits. The WHO and the international community will have to intervene in a strong manner.
