 | Old story: Chinese repression in Xinjiang
Our Correspondent It is the same old story in Xinjiang, the Muslim majority province of China. The Uighurs, an ethnic and religious minority, are being persecuted and discriminated against by the majority Han settlers, who are backed by Beijing. Rebiya Kadeer, the exiled Uighur leader, is being maligned by the official machinery of China; the exiled Washington-based businessperson is being accused of having organized the recent protests and riots in Xinjiang. “I didn’t have anything to do with these protests, but I love my people and they love me,” she said. “The protests are a reaction to China’s repressive policies in East Turkestan.” This is the term Uighur nationalists prefer over the official name of the province. Chinese repression in its northwestern province is borne out by the facts accepted even by Beijing. At the time of the Revolution in China in 1949, the Han population in Xinjiang was 6 per cent; the official data put the figure today at 40 per cent, and this excludes military personnel, their families and many unregistered migrant workers. The similarity of this story with the plight of Tibetans is too conspicuous to miss: the peace-loving people of this unfortunate country have been similarly repressed, oppressed and enslaved in their homeland by Red China.
The Uighur reaction, however, is not similar to that of the Tibetans’, as the Uighurs are not wedded to the principle of non-violence. In fact, there is also a vigorous campaign to establish an Islamic state in Xinjiang. The East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) is a militant organization committed to the creation of an independent, Islamic state. The United States listed the ETIM as a terrorist outfit on August 27 2002. The ETIM is said to have forged links with Al-Qaida. The US State Department’s 2005 report on terrorism said that the group was “linked to al-Qaida and the international jihadist movement.” China is being paid back in the same currency. We are talking about the currency of malice and criminality in international affairs. To further its own ends—a major part of which was its nefarious design to humble and harm India in every possible manner—China used the weapon of jihad. Knowing it pretty well that Pakistan is the engine house of terror, it helped Islamabad in every way so that it could unleash jihadis against India. But now chickens may be coming home to roost, for the violent repression may end up marginalizing civil leaders like Kadeer and throwing up an Islamist leadership. The recent violence, which left over 150 dead, has already sparked protests all over the world. The Chinese embassies in the Netherlands and Germany were attacked by protestors. Repression does not go on unnoticed—or unavenged.Posted on : 7/19/2009 Mail this article to your friendback |
